Miniature Zebu cattle are the world’s smallest breed of miniature cattle and one of the oldest, dating back to 6000 BC. They are native to India, Africa, and Southeast Asia. The name “Zebu” is derived from the Tibetan word “ceba”, which means “hump”. Zebu cattle have a hump on their back, even when they are born, and a moderate dewlap and ears that point straight out from the head.
They are true Miniatures meaning they were not bred down but are naturally small. At maturity, Zebus measure 29 to 42 inches at the withers and weigh between 200 and 600 pounds. Zebu cattle are perfect for families with children! Many families want to own cattle but are intimidated by the size of many breeds.
Zebus offer a great opportunity for young children to care for and train an animal while giving them a sense of accomplishment.
They come in a variety of colors, including shades of white, gray, black, red and various patterns of painted, speckled, and brindled. Gray is the most common. They are slower to mature with a life span of 20 to 25 years. Zebu like to be on pasture with grass, are easy to care for, and do not require high protein supplements. They are great for small land owners as they can thrive on smaller acreage.
Zebu have excellent heat resistance and tolerate hot climates as well as cold climates. They are more resistant than other breeds to internal and external parasites. Cows generally deliver without complications and are great mothers.
Zebu cattle, also known as humped cattle or Bos indicus, are among the oldest and most resilient breeds in the world. Originating from South Asia and widely bred across Africa, Zebu are highly valued for their hardiness, adaptability to hot climates, and resistance to diseases and parasites.
