History of the Brahman<\/h1>\n

To begin with, the Brahman breed<\/a> originated from Bos indicus<\/em> cattle from India<\/a>, known as the \u201csacred cattle of India\u201d. Centuries of exposure to inadequate food<\/a> supplies, insect<\/a> pests, parasites, diseases<\/a> and extreme weather conditions of tropical India<\/a> resulted in the native<\/a> cattle developing some remarkable adaptations for survival which international modern<\/a> breeders found to be highly<\/a> advantageous.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

In South Africa, the Brahman was<\/a> introduced to the beef cattle scene<\/a> in 1954 when Mr Jurgen Crantz imported eight<\/a> males and ten females from Texas, USA. The breed came to play a major part in the production of red meat in Southern Africa.<\/p>\n

Brahman Characteristics<\/h2>\n

Characterised by a large hump over the top of the shoulder and neck, large pendulous<\/a> ears and abundant folds<\/a> of skin. They vary in colour from very light grey or red to almost black. The<\/a> thick skin makes them resistant to insects<\/a> and are known for their extreme tolerance to heat, resulting in being widespread in tropical<\/a> regions. Brahman cattle live longer than many other<\/a> breeds, often producing calves<\/a> at ages 15 and older.<\/p>\n

Brahmans are<\/a> intermediate in size among beef breeds. Mature bulls must<\/a> have a mass of between<\/a> 750 kg and 1030 kg, and mature cows<\/a> must have a mass between 500 kg and 660 kg. The calves<\/a> are small at birth, weighing<\/a> up to only about 30kg (60 to 65 pounds), but grow<\/a> very rapidly and wean at weights comparable to other<\/a> breeds.<\/p>\n
